Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 2-6, 2020

March 2, 2020—As the season begins to turn from winter to spring, the weather can become volatile. It is important to learn the signs of severe weather and what you can do to stay safe. The National Weather Service and the State Emergency Management Agency have declared the week of March 2-6, 2020 as Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Boone County Office of Emergency Management is participating through a social media campaign to ensure citizens are prepared for spring weather.

The goal of this week is to save lives through raising awareness and encouraging preparedness. Everybody should have a basic knowledge of the threats that spring weather can impose on their communities. Knowing severe weather safety and having a plan in place during threatening weather can be the difference between life and death.

During Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week, each day is given a different topic. Boone County Office of Emergency Management will be sharing facts, tips, and safety information on their social media throughout the week to educate citizens on how to best protect themselves.

Below is the schedule of topics:

Monday, March 2nd – Receiving Weather Info
To receive weather watches and warnings by text, email and/or phone in Boone County, visit Smart911.com to create a safety profile, and opt-in to receive Rave alerts.

Tuesday, March 3rd – Tornado Safety
The Annual Statewide Tornado Drill will be held at 10:00 a.m. During this drill, NOAA Weather Radios will be activated. In event of adverse weather, this test will be postponed to Thursday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m.
*The regularly scheduled outdoor warning siren test will be conducted Wednesday March 4th at 12:00 p.m. (weather dependent).

Boone County Office of Emergency Management encourages everyone to participate in the drill by discussing tornado safety and evacuating to your tornado safe place. Remember, the best place to be during a tornado is the most interior room on the lowest level of any structure.
